Psychotherapist & Hearing Therapist
The Clitheroe Therapies Clinic - beautiful premises in the heart of Lancashire in central Clitheroe
Hello!
Qualified and registered as a Psychotherapist, a Hypnotherapist and Hearing Therapy practitioner, I set up the Clitheroe Therapies Clinic in September 2010
I use Clinical Outcome measures as a matter of process for every course of therapy or treatment be that for tinnitus management, cognitive therapy (including CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) for stress, anxiety and depression, relaxation courses and the Stress Reduction Clinic
My Background
As Head of Hearing Therapy Services based in Burnley and Blackburn at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust for 9 years 2001-2010, my responsibilities were for specialist rehabilitative service provision for NHS patients who have tinnitus, hyperacusis, balance/vestibular disorders and hearing loss
At the end of May 2010, I left the NHS after 17 years as a Hearing Therapist specialising in helping people with distressing tinnitus and related psychological / emotional problems. Prior to moving to Lancashire, I was based in Birmingham and before that, in Epping, Essex. Prior to working in the NHS, my background was in teaching, working with adults with hearing loss
Since leaving the NHS, I have been able to devote more time to in-depth study for an MSc in Psychotherapy Studies with the University of Sheffield that has proven so helpful for in-depth therapy work with clients
How I work at the Clitheroe Therapies Clinic
As well as providing 'mainstream' psychological therapies such as Cognitive Therapy and CBT, I also use an 'Existential' approach in my work that better enables people to explore their needs and why they feel and experience what they do. I have found it to be what I so often thought of as "the missing link" - when someone has worked through a process of CBT for example, yet they continue to feel unsettled, discontented and even unhappy and they don't know or understand why. An existential approach seeks out "why" and helps people resolve what are often long term feelings of discontentment
At this point in time (April 2012) I have completed my studies for the MSc and am currently working on my dissertation
Beyond the therapy room, I am a Director of Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy Limited. I provide training for Audiologists (NHS and those in private practice) in Counselling Skills and Tinnitus Management, and continue when invited to lecture at The University of Manchester as a Guest Lecturer in Tinnitus for their BSc and MSc Audiology courses, since being seconded to the university from my NHS Hearing Therapy practice in 2006
My work also includes undertaking therapy for medical-legal clients arranged through their solicitors. Medical-legal work is carried out either in the Consulting Rooms at The Beardwood Hospital, Blackburn where I have Practicing Privileges, or at the Clitheroe Therapies Clinic in central Clitheroe
