Why Therapy?

There are always going to be times during our lives when we find we need to make some changes and for the most part, most of us “go with the flow” and the changes “happen”. Sometimes we choose to make those changes happen and sometimes the changes are imposed on us – maybe through situations and circumstance, maybe because other people impose changes on us.

Whether change is being made through our own choice or not –  making changes is often challenging and uncomfortable and can make us feel insecure, unsure of ourselves and uncertain of our future.

These insecurities threaten who we are and our place in the world; we experience uncomfortable thoughts and emotions that lead to increased anxiety and we might feel low or depressed.

We often “catastrophise” by thinking irrational thoughts – although when the thoughts are going through our minds we don’t recognise them as being irrational: on the contrary, we convince ourselves they are true. For example: “I won’t be able to cope if X happens”. In fact, we don’t truly know whether we will cope or not, but we tell ourselves we won’t and so it becomes “fact” to us: we fear it and we experience more negative emotion that in turn leads to emotionally driven behaviour; we might cry, we might get angry, sleep can be affected detrimentally and we can suffer ill health – physical aches and pains because of increased tension for example are common effects of stress.

It is more often than not such times as these that have led people to seek help in the form of counselling and psychotherapies. By undertaking a course or programme of therapy, a skilled practitioner can help guide you through the complex thought processes you have been struggling with and enable you to deal with the problem to the point of achieving a satisfactory outcome – your goal.

One of the first things you will be asked by your therapist is what has brought you to therapy? What do you want out of therapy? What are your goals? It might take a couple of sessions to define exactly what your goals are and ensure that they are achievable, but goal setting is extremely important. Not only does it give you a target to aim for but it ensures that both you and the therapist are working together towards the same agreed goal or goals.
