This is a question I have been asked so many times now, I
thought it would help to write about it in my website’s Blog. If you are asking that question, a better question would be “Can
hypnotherapy help with....” and include
what it is you are looking for help with. It seems that quite a lot of people have the impression that
hypnotherapy is a “quick fix” for all sorts of problems. Unfortunately it is no
more a quick fix than any other type of therapy, although for the right problem
it may well be more effective - sometimes in terms of number of sessions needed
- than an alternative type of therapy or counselling. Hypnotherapy is
particularly effective for fears and phobias, and habits we want to break –
depending though on why the particular problem has emerged. It is also
brilliant (for a person who responds well to it) for re-enforcing effects of
other therapy approaches. My training was in Hypno-psychotherapy rather than
Hypnotherapy, and so combining hypnosis and psychotherapy has always been the
way I have worked. Combining the two is remarkably effective, and consistently
so in my experience. A common misconception of hypnotherapy is that we don’t
remember what happened during a session, or even that we have no control over
what we do or think during hypnosis. It is, in fact, quite uncommon not to
remember anything that happens during hypnotherapy. We also all have a kind of
safety factor (critical factor) built in to us psychologically, that would
prevent us from doing or saying or accepting anything that would normally go
against our own wishes and needs. Provided
you are working with a properly qualified and registered Hypnotherapist, hypnotherapy
is very safe indeed. As when looking for any counsellor or psychological therapist,
DO make sure you check out not only their qualifications but even more
importantly, their registrations. Being properly registered means that the
practitioner keeps up to date in their practice. If they are properly
registered, you will be able to find their registration on-line these days,
completely separately from a therapist’s own website. For example, I have
several registrations for several types of practice. The main one I have for
Hypnotherapy is with the CNHC, a professional registration body that came about
through government support, so by going directly to the CNHC website (Complementary
& Natural Healthcare Council) you will find me listed in their list of registrants
for Hypnotherapy. Additionally, I am registered with the NSHP (National Society
for Hypnotherapists and Psychotherapists) and again, I can be found independently
through a search in their website. There is a link from my website to the CNHC and other registration
bodies with whom I am registered, but to be absolutely safe at all times when
searching on-line, be sure to go to the register independently by typing in the
address to your web browser. For example, for the CNHC you can type in www.cnhcregister.org.uk or www.cnhc.org.uk Whether you come to see me or you find an alternative
hypnotherapist, I wish you every success! And a very HAPPY NEW YEAR to you! Debbie Featherstone |
